Bye bye Thesis Chapter

Local paper has an article about how it is very difficult to erase data from hard drives, and yet, when you lose a chapter of your thesis or your Very Important Power Point presentation the IT guys just shrug and say better luck next time.

Comedy writer Ken Levine has a nice rant about pop-up ads.

My favorite part:
It’s as if you’re watching a concert and suddenly from out of nowhere someone gets right up into your grill and screams “HEY, WANNA BUY LIFE INSURANCE?!!” What are the chances you’ll say “Sure. Thanks. I specifically went to this remaining-Beatles reunion just hoping someone would sell me long term life insurance”?

Mickey Mouse meets Tony Stark

Disney has reached a deal to purchase Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters, including The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, all of which have been turned into highly valuable feature film franchises.

Wow. This is a huge deal, though I admit, I'm not sure what to make of it. I would imagine that it's win-win for Disney. The properties mentioned above are all proven winners and I can just see the characters walking around the Disney theme parks and the ride designers are probably salivating over the possibilities. Lots of cross-promotion possibilities as well.

I would imagine however, that this does not bode well for any smaller, under-performing comic series. Disney is about the bottom line and, especially in this economy, they will undoubtedly be looking to cut costs.

I also wonder if this will be a problem for darker, adult themed material. I tend to think it won't, Miramax managed to put out lots of edgy material for years and Disney rarely faced backlash. I'm sure that there will be lots of analysis (and hand wringing) in the days to come from people far more knowledgeable than I.

Is it 9/10 yet???

Mo Ryan of The Chicago Tribune has a fabulous in depth interview with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke (mild spoilers for season 5).

In the interview Kripke talks about the evolution of the show- how it started as a horror movie every week.  When they broke the stories it was "ok, what's the monster this week?" but the focus quickly shifted to the characters and the monsters became secondary.  Read the full transcript here

a suitcase full of knives

From TV Guide Magazine:

"It all started at Comic-Con this summer when comedian Paul Scheer gifted Lost’s exec producers with a wacky velvet painting of themselves with a polar bear. Now the site that goes by the same name is revealing a series of 16 limited-run posters of Lost moments by top artists, released one per week. As a bonus, secret Lost-themed events are popping up world-wide to premiere each one, so keep checking the site for clues to discover if the next poster might be revealed near you. Call it an act of good Dharma"

I'd like the poster above, would be a nice companion to the actual Vertigo print I have...

Douchiest Colleges

So GQ has published a list of America's 25 Douchiest Colleges described thusly:
The question isn't whether you're a douche bag when you go to college. We were all kind of douche bags when we went to college, if we're going to be honest about it. No, the question for America's youth is: What kind of douche bag do you aspire to be? Like, Where can you go if you want to major in Jet Skiing? How about if you're a trust-fund type but are embarrassed about it? What if you want to lord your intelligence over people for the rest of your life, in the form of a bumper sticker? Picking the right school can be daunting. That's why GQ offers up its heavily researched, possibly stereotypey, but still accurate guide.
Lil Sis is now a "When I Was 17 Douche" (she was almost a "Paul Wolfowitz Douche").

One of my alma maters (can you still call it that if you didn't actually graduate?) was an honorable mention for the "Excessive School Pride Douche" (can't believe another school topped actually).

You know what Netflix's employee vacation policy is?  They DON'T HAVE ONE.
"Employees at the online movie retailer often leave for three, four, even five weeks at a time and never clock in or out. Vacation limits and face-time  requirements, says Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings, are "a relic of the industrial age."
